Progress Toward Net-Zero Emissions
Scope 1 Emissions
These are direct greenhouse gas emissions that come from sources owned or controlled by the organization. This includes emissions from company-owned vehicles, equipment, and facilities, as well as emissions from chemical reactions in industrial processes.
Scope 2 Emissions
These are indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling by the organization. Scope 2 emissions come from the generation of energy that the organization consumes but does not produce itself.
Scope 3 Emissions
These are all other indirect emissions that occur in the organization's value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions. This category includes emissions from sources such as purchased goods and services, employee commuting, business travel, and the use of products sold by the organization.
Carbon Offset
A carbon offset is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions made to compensate for emissions produced elsewhere. This can involve investing in projects that reduce emissions, such as renewable energy projects or reforestation efforts, to balance out the emissions produced by an organization's operations.
Net Emissions
Total amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by an entity after accounting for any reductions or offsets that have been implemented to mitigate those emissions.
Avoided Emissions
The reduction or prevention of greenhouse gas emissions that would have occurred under a business-as-usual scenario but are avoided due to the implementation of specific actions or measures.
